Say Hello to the Bijou Bibliotheque in Invermay, TAS. This quirky little library has a herb garden roof, a fairy door, a drawer of goodies, lights, colourful decorations and of course, BOOKS!

Street Librarian Bianca says you should visit this library “if you need a sprig of thyme for your dinner, a dose of colour for your eyeballs, a lemon, or a cute kid’s book.”

We’d like to give a big, grateful, shout out to The Hamlin St Library in Quakers Hill, NSW. Managed by two bossy pomeranians and their humans (one of whom is an ex-library technician), this Street Library not only offers a great selection of books, it encourages community interactions and promotes language and literacy via its community noticeboard and ‘grab some vocab’ cards, which are designed to encourage learning among the community.

“This library has allowed community members to make new friendships,” says one community member. “It is a very special place and it deserves recognition!”

New product alert! We’re chuffed to announce there’s an extremely handsome and practical new Street Library on the block. Meet our new model, ‘The Big Pete’.

Isn’t he lovely?

The Big Pete is lovingly named after one of our favourite Petes, a fella who is hugely instrumental in the construction of all of our Street Libraries. It measures approximately 71cm internally at its highest point and has an internal shelf with a luxurious internal depth of 22cms. The bottom half is perfect for accommodating small-medium sized paperbacks while the top shelf can house books that are larger in size. A perfectly pitched roof tops off The Big Pete, for those who like a library with a more traditional look and story book feel.

Like all of our models, The Big Pete features high quality nickel plated steel fixings, marine quality plywood for a longer life, and an easy to paint door with removable 3mm tough perspex. Your purchase includes a free Street Library outdoor sign, individually worth $25.

A very special Honourable Mention for Mr. Gilbert

A very special Honourable Mention for Mr. Gilbert in Catherine Field, part of the Macarthur Region of NSW.

We loved checking out the nominations for the 2022 Street Library of the Year and it was beautiful to see which libraries delighted the small team of volunteers who assisted in creating the shortlist.

The Mr. Gilbert Street Library was singled out by every member of our volunteer panel, and for that reason we have awarded a very special Honourable Mention to this much-loved Street Library.

Street Librarian Leanne says the library was originally inspired by ‘Better Homes and Gardens’. “They made a mini replica of the British Telephone booth,” she says. “We decided to make ours a lot bigger so it holds a lot more books. Everything is completely hand made from raw materials, cut, screwed together and all hand painted.”

With time, Mr. Gilbert has come to symbolise a little more than your typical Street Library, and the number of submissions made in support of Mr. Gilbert is testament to the appreciation felt by the community for Leanne’s efforts.

“Mr. Gilbert has kept our community in touch with each other throughout the most horrific times in our recent history,” wrote one of many supportive patrons.

“We’ve experienced fires, the pandemic and repeated flooding. With this library Leanne has helped us get back to the basic root of human nature; to look out for one another.”

We are thrilled to reveal that the winner of the 2022 Street Library of the Year award goes to the Kicking It At Kingston Library, QLD!

We're also calling on the entire Street Library community to congratulate those who made submissions for the 2022 Street Library of the Year; they were a delightful mix of old hands, newbies, individuals and organisations; all of whom make Street Library a generous, caring and joyous community.

Special thanks to our Author Judge Holly Throsby, who made the final selection from a shortlist curated by a crack team of volunteers, all of whom deserve our gratitude also.

Holly says: "This library is a wonderful representation of community spirit – in both the community-minded intention behind its creation, and the way the library has been embraced and expanded by the community itself. The concept of 'library' has been broadened to include not just books, but clothes, toys, bric-a-brac, and household items.”

She continues: "The library – along with the associated community vegetable gardens, the 'hidden swap rock area', the online Facebook group, and the fact that the site has become a community hub – has helped to refresh and revitalise this sometimes-maligned area with the intrinsic benefits of what Angela calls a 'gifting economy'. I commend the efforts of Angela, and the diverse locals of Logan who contribute to this awesome Street Library."

Here, here! Angela will receive a Street Library gift pack that includes a very special Street Library of the Year plaque, plus a copy of Holly’s latest novel 'Clarke'.

Meet Goldie, head library monitor of Goldie’s St

Meet Goldie, head library monitor of Goldie’s Street Library in Norwood, SA. Goldie’s library offers a range of eclectic books and is set back nice and deep on the verandah of a beautiful federation-era building, well-protected from the elements.

Her human (and librarian), Jo, says Goldie welcomes other humans to take, give and share books from her library. Apparently Goldie will politely accept your pats when approached with caution.
