After many years on our tropical beachfront, the original Beach Book Treasure at Yorkeys Knob street library was showing significant decay. Members of the Yorkeys Knob Residents Association raised the need for a replacement Street Library. The association then took measurements of the existing box and took these to the Marlin Coast Men’s Shed, where a replacement was built. The Absolute Art Group, who decorated the original street library, rose to the challenge once again and painted murals on the new library. It was then sealed with 4 coats of marine varnish by an association member. All costs for the replacement were made from association funds to benefit the community and its visitors.
Our Street Library is incredibly important; a well-used facility with books constantly being exchanged. During the recent effects of Tropical Cyclone Jasper, and the subsequent flooding of this community, the book library became a significant resource for many residents who were stuck in damaged properties and no electricity. It is satisfying to know that this small facility is now renewed to service the community for years to come.
