I was inspired to become a part of this wonderful initiative after seeing the story on the ABC Bookish programme. I immediately thought, I am going to be a part of this project! Reading has always been a passion of mine, and as a recently retired art teacher I love to use my painting skills in creative ways!
I bought the doll’s house from a local opshop for $35 and then set to task to design the work. I used my street name as an idea, and researched what a Coolabah tree looked like, and off I started painting! Within hours of it going up, the interest from passerbys, children and their parents on the way to school and neighbors has been exciting to see.
The children are going to take a photo and write an article about it for their school newsletter. I have talked to many neighbors from surrounding streets for the first time! One way I can maintain the library is to go outside before and after school, when I am home, and engage the children and adults in conversation about why they chose particular books and why they have enjoyed reading them.
