The new town opened its first street library in March for residents to exchange books for free outside the Huntlee cafĂ©. The initiative was kick-started by resident Brett Laing, who received funding through the Huntlee Community Grants scheme. Mr Laing and Huntlee community liaison officer, Walter Mansfield, commissioned the Greta-Branxton Men’s Shed to construct the custom-made library.
Both said they hoped the library would help create a sense of community.
“I thought it would a be a good thing for the area with all the kids and the cafe,” Mr Laing said.
As the community grows, more street libraries will be created. Mr Mansfield maintains the library, planting succulents in the base and watering them. He also updates the books on a weekly basis ensuring that there is a constant recycling of books donated by the community.
Located beside the Community Noticeboard and playground and outside the bustling Huntlee Cafe this Street Library is perfectly located!
