This library started its life’s journey as an outside bar fridge, but when it came to the end of that life, someone realised its shelving, clear doors and robust construction would make it an ideal street library – and here we are! Milperra Shops seems to provide an ideal home – it is well patronised, with a small independent supermarket/bottleshop, a butcher, a baker, a barber, a greengrocer, a cafe, a pizzeria, a pilates studio and a massage/beautician – everything but a candlestick-maker and a library! We are still looking for a candle-stick maker.
In the absence of a permanent library in our suburb, our hope is that this street library, and others like it, will make books more accessible to the locals, and encourage them (particularly the younger generation) to discover the joys of reading and paying-it-forward.
