After joining the Taroona Good Karma Facebook page Robyn Hopcroft and Victoria Jacob were inspired to create a community book exchange.
We encouraged locals to select a book and if they enjoyed it, drop it back into the exchange. Large donations of books are to be dropped into Robyn’s residence for sorting but single donations can be popped into the drawers of the cabinet. Any surplus vegetables or fruit can be left on the top shelf of the cabinet so locals can help themselves. As the book exchange is on the school walking route it is delightful to see children picking up an apple and a book on their way to and from school.
Using an old filing cabinet, artistic skills of Robyn Hopcroft and a bit of elbow grease we created a Community Library in the heart of Taroona. We allocated the top drawer to the adults in the community and the bottom drawer for the kids. We even managed to create a small shelf at the top of the cabinet with solar lights and a perspex roof to accommodate surplus vegetables or fruit the locals wished to offer to the community.
