The Pelican Bookery

Shopping precinct, School of Arts Hall facade, Duke Street, Paterson, NSW 2421

Our library is dedicated to children's books because this is where love of books must begin.

The Library was initiated by the Paterson Progress Association. On purchasing ‘The Shed’ a local (Maitland) artist, John Addams volunteered to paint it. When deciding on a theme, naturally pelicans came to mind as a local character by the name of Bill Cummins (owner of a sheet metal business) had been erecting them all over Paterson on buildings to symbolise their usage eg a pelican with handcuffs hanging of its beak for the police station, a pelican teacher with young pelican students on the local school. About 60 all told. As Bill had recently passed away, the PPA decided to dedicate the ‘shed’ in honour of Bill and his generous, community minded nature. The signs too were donated by a local company.
