If you are out and about in the Georges River Council area, you may notice something a bit different.

Georges River Council has installed six street libraries throughout the area as part of a program developed in response to a Notice of Motion by Councillor Lou Konjarski.

Councillor Konjarski said that the street library program is a positive addition to the local area with the street libraries helping to encourage literacy and building a sense of community.

“Street libraries allow residents to re-engage with their love of reading and encourage our children to be sustainable. Books that we have at home gathering dust, can be shared and enjoyed by many more young readers,” Cr Konjarski said.

“Located in Beverly Hills, Carss Park, Kogarah, Penshurst, Oatley and South Hurstville our street libraries are located within walking distance of our childcare centres, and they enable community members to donate and swap books on an ongoing basis easily.

“There are books for all ages on offer. However, we really want to encourage a love of literacy among our young children to help give them a lifelong love of learning. We’ve been encouraged by the use the street libraries have had so far.”
