Current Status: Busily donating libraries to individuals and not-for-profit organisations with a drive to promote literacy and create community connections. Applications are always welcome via our website – which is how we found one of our newest Street Librarian… 95-year old Mollie!
Mollie’s daughter Vic submitted an application for a donated Street Library on behalf of Mollie, who is a retired teacher, lifelong reader and local library volunteer.
“She has been retired for 30+ years and, until recently, has always been very active in the community, helping drive ‘old people’ to and from church, volunteering at the op shop and also as a guide with Friends of the Zoo,” shared Vic.
“I’d love her to have a street library at home to keep her busy and engaged with the local community from her verandah!”
Enter Nina and her friends, who were looking for a meaningful 30th Birthday Present for their pal Jade, and decided that gifting a Street Library to a fellow member of the community would be just the ticket.
After consulting the Street Library Australia Donation Waitlist we found Vic & Mollie’s application, and have taken great delight in teaming up this new circle of friends.
“Now Mollie looks forward to having books delivered to her door – or front fence, to be more precise!” says Vic.
Mollie’s library was officially launched in May at an afternoon tea hosted by the delighted new library recipient and custodian. Also present at this auspicious occasion was Nina, Jade and Jade’s handsome pup, Pluto.
So there you have it: Melbourne’s newest Street Library… donated by Nina and Jade (and Pluto), installed by Mollie’s grandson Jerome, painted by daughter, Victoria and photography courtesy of another daughter, Anna.
A true community effort!
