What’s better than finding a generous stash of books on your street that you can borrow from and add to?

Making your very own Street Library and becoming a host to a new community asset in your own area!

Last weekend 15  aspiring librarians got together in the fabulous Maker Space in Marrickville to get behind the tools and build a Street Library pretty much from scratch. Drop saw… tick, nail gun… tick, electric drill… tick, family sized m&m’s tick tick. Fatal injuries… absolutely zero, in fact not even close. From building beginners to experts it was as much an opportunity to hone some skills as it was creating something that was ready to take home at the end of the session.

While the builders got stuck into the construction, Kylie and Lisa got a bit creative with painting the outsides of a couple of Street Libraries Nic had knocked up earlier. The painting would usually be done at home, after the maker session, but it’s a great opportunity to both personalise your Street Library as well as provide an added weather protective coating.

Now we just have to wait and see where these new Street Libraries will pop up, and you can see where too by checking out the registration page and seeing if there is street library near you. If not maybe send us a note letting us know that you want to book a slot at the next maker day event.

Hope to see you there – come to the next event in January !
