The teachers and children at Excelsior Avenue Child Care Centre have always had a strong connection with their community, but the recent development and lockdown due to the coronavirus, sadly put a halt to our regular engagement with the wider community.
Upon reflection, the thought of introducing a ‘Street Library’ sparked a wealth of excitement and offered a means for connecting with our community once more.
Through sharing our passion and love for reading, we hope to encourage others to engross themselves in a good book or to read and discover alongside others.
Not only does our Street Library contain some lovely stories, but it is also visually appealing and representative of the wildlife and nature we encounter here on a daily basis. We place a strong sense of value on our environment, regularly encouraging the children’s sense of connection with nature. The bird wildlife have become a part of our family, with the children attuned as to where they are throughout the day, engaging in conversations surrounding them, observing and caring for them and welcoming them into our daily routines.
The concept of our Street Library was posed to the children of our preschool, and together they decided that they would like to have our friendly birds and wildlife painted onto our library.
After reaching out to a community member, our wonderful Street Library returned painted with the children’s imaginative thoughts and ideas. The children offered their appreciation and thanks through beautiful paintings, written words and cards of their own.
We hope you enjoy and appreciate the beauty in our Street Library as much as we do!
So come… take a book, or donate a book, explore and enjoy in the wonder that Street Libraries can create.
